The life of a Mets fan living in Chicago.

Today in Baseball

August 14th, 2007 Posted in Floor hockey, General, Pedro, Yankees Hating

Some sad news today, baseball lost one of its greats today, Phil Rizzuto. Looking past the fact he was a life-long Yankee, he had some spunk and never gave up when he was told he was too small to play baseball. The NY Post’s Kevin Kernan has a great article on his life and career.

A few lighter notes from the day:

  • The Mets beat the Pirates tonight 5-4. I did not see the game for lack of MLB Extra Innings at home and I was otherwise occupied playing a floor hockey playoff game. (We won too.) I followed the Mets score for a little while…but they really need to score some runs. No more of this one run here, give two up there, get one back and so on.
  • Vote For Pedro. Pedro Martinez had his second rehab start. A great improvement over his last start. It seems he’ll need three to four more starts before coming up to the bigs again. Here’s to hoping it’s soon and that he’ll be ready for some post season action.
  • Baseball is all about stats, right? One to note (without an asterisk) is that Braves manager Bobby Cox has set the record for most ejections in baseball history. Now if only we could get Larry Jones ejected for good…or something…
  • The Yankees got spanked, the Red Sox won and the Blue Jays won. A good day in the AL East, if I may say so.
