Glavine Gets Key to NYC

Tom Glavine and Mayor Bloomberg

This past Wednesday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg honored Tom Glavine’s 300th win by presenting him with a key to the city. Wednesday was also the day much of the NYC subway system was shut down due to flooding, and apparently a caller to the Mayor’s radio show took issue with his lack of attention to the problem. I may also have been mad if I lived in the area, knowing how crappy it can be when subways aren’t running, but I take issue with his wearing of a Mets hat. I know it’s a way of life for politicians to often wear something representative of the team at an event like this, but a) I’m pretty sure he’s an open NY Yankees fan and b) he just looks goofy.

For some real Glavine honoring, the Mets are going to have a pre-game ceremony on Sunday at Shea. A video tribute and surprise presentations from teammates and others will take place. Having been at Shea for a Mike Piazza ceremony, when he broke the record for most home runs by catcher (in 2004), I know these events are great and I would love to be there for this one.
